Locals historically performed sacrificial ceremonies on an island until missionaries identified this activity as "devilish." This led to the naming of the area and subsequent part of the falls. The Devil's Cataract is approximately 229 feet (70 m) deep. This is one of the best ways to capture the grandeur of Victoria Falls. It is imperative that you leverage the microlites or a helicopter and get an aerial view of the falls. Iguazu Falls located on the border of Argentina and Brazil is the largest waterfall complex, but Victoria Falls is the largest single sheet waterfall. Statistically speaking, it is the world’s largest waterfall and one of the most aesthetically beautiful falls as well. It is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Victoria Falls is the highlight of the national park. There is also a massive balboa tree that measures 52 feet (16 m) in diameter and 65.6 feet (20 m) high. Animals are not the reason to visit, but they do add to the overall nature experience. The fifth Eastern Cataract is located on the Zambia side of the border.Įlephant, buffalo, white rhino, eland, hippo, and varying antelope can be experienced with short game drives in the park. These include Devil's Cataract, Main Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Horseshoe Falls. The falls reach a height of 355 feet (108 m) and stretch across 5,604 feet (1,708 m) creating the largest single sheet of falling water. Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognizing this feat of nature as the largest waterfall in the world. Together, these two national parks protect the world's largest waterfall. Please anyone that is considering a visit then you have to go.Victoria Falls National Park is the Zimbabwe protected area of the shared natural wonder of Victoria Falls with Zambia’s protected area being Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Baboons were no trouble at all and the Zambian people were just lovely. An event my dad was fortunate enough to witness. May was a perfect month and we sadly just missed the lunar moon which normally happens around the 22nd of May. Words fail me to describe it well enough to do it justice. If you are ever fortunate enough to visit this beautiful wonder of the world please do not miss the chance. My son and daughter in law also agree and they are even further travelled than us. My husband and I have been fortunate in that before covid we visited lots of countries and have seen some fabulous sites but the walk and helicopter ride over the falls is still for us the best thing we have ever done. To say the visit was awesome is an understatement. I'd taken some momentos of my dad's and his story which id placed in waterproof covering and bags and my husband and I buried it on a hill facing the bridge which joins Zambia with Zimbabwe. Even a huge circular rainbow that you felt you were standing in the middle of. The falls were in full flow, it was a beautiful day and there were rainbows everywhere. We walked all around the falls unescorted and the highlight was crossing Knife Edge Bridge at the falls. We were on the Zambian side and stayed at The Zambezi Sun Hotel. Given my dad had passed 8 months before it was an emotional but wonderful journey and definately one of the highlights of my life. It had always been an ambition for me to go ever since I saw a photo of my dad standing at the falls when I was a little girl. This review dates do not go back that far therefore did what I could but we did visit in May 2013. We actually visited the Victoria Falls in 201ģ following the death of my father who had visited in 1952. ![]()
